Guide to Office Romance

Glances, winks, smiles, blushes, good compliments and the next time you know it, they are having lunch together, dinner and then exchanging emails. Office romance can happen to any of your employees of the opposite sex. But before this can go any further, you will need to reinforce an office romance law.

Enforcing a no dating policy in the company is not an easy task. And if you do enforce a no dating policy make sure that you have written the policy clearly for your employee to understand and it should be included in the employee’s manual. When enforcing a law, there should be no exception to it.

Office romance can have a different meaning. It might also lead to harassment. Giving someone a good compliment and harassment are two different things that an employer needs to understand the difference of these two. Harassment complaints in the company has been growing so it is good to study the different ways of harassment to keep you away from future troubles.

It is best for the employer to know what the law says about sexual harassments. There are many forms of harassments the common unwanted glances, comments and or advances. An employee can file any legal suit as long as it is proved that there was a sexual harassment that’s been involved. Get training booklets for you and your employees about sexual harassments. This does not cost a lot but it can save your time and avoid any troubles in the future.

You cannot stop two people from loving each other but you can let them know what is and what is not acceptable in your company. There are advantages for having in love employees. They are happier and more inspired to work. Therefore, with this attitude an employee have more productivity in their work.

Managers or supervisors should not be engaged in any romantic affairs with employees who are under their management or supervisory. This can have a big effect in your company, in its culture and in its interest.

Not all office romance has a happy ending. Some of them have a bad end and as a result, they need help in coping with the pain that they are going through. A counselor is good for your company to help employees get back to their feet and overcome the feelings of hurts inside.

Encourage your employees to date someone from another department instead of the same section. Tell your employees that if they are planning to end their relationship on a Friday that they should instead to it on a Monday. If it’s done on a Monday, expect a sudden change in your employee’s attitude in the days ahead. They can be working very hard to forget the pain or they can stay at home and mourn and therefore you lose production for the day. If this time comes, be gentle with your employees, respect her feelings because this can be an opportunity for a spurned lover to get back at them by filing a claim of harassment.
