Dress Codes for Small Business

Dress code is a set of rules that companies developed to help their employees about what is and what is not appropriate to wear in the workplace. The dress code varies from one company to another depends on what kind of work they have. It also depends on how much interaction an employee has with the customers.

Dress styles changes all the time. And your employees also what to wear something that is in style at work. All the new dress styles are not all appropriate to wear at work. Remember that what your employees wear reflects the company that you have. That is why most companies are now creating a guideline of what should and shouldn’t wear at work.

There are two things to keep in mind when making a dress code policy. One is the professionalism and the other is safety reasons. Creating a policy isn’t an easy task. There are so many things to consider when making one. Like, equality to the gender, it has to be enforceable, and the religious belief of each employee. A good policy is the one that is understood by all employees and be able to follow the policy.

To have an effective dress code policy for employees, the employer must consider the employees roles in his company. Do they interact with clients frequently? Do they have a lot of walking? If so you don’t want them to dress casually but instead to wear something that is business like. It is also good to consider your employees genders and their religious issues. You can’t have an employee to wear a short skirt if their religion only allows them to wear long skirts. Be specific about what and what cannot be worn to avoid any allegations. Your policy should also be clear and well informed to all employees.

It is recommended that you put the dress code policy in the employee’s manual. Be updated on what are the new styles that are in. You don’t want to have your employees to wear something that is out dated style already. This way you will be able to track any changes you need to do on the policy. Before creating a dress code policy, make sure that you know the current laws regarding dress requirements to avoid any accusations of illegalities and discriminations.

When the policy for dress code has been developed. Make sure that all the employees have been informed. You can make a departmental memo, a poster, or written on your weekly publication. You can also add it to the employee’s manual and then have the employees sign a receipt stating that they have understood the policy. It is also good to give your employees the reason of having the dress code policy, may it be for safety or your company’s image. Also be consistent and strictly enforce the policy to everybody with no exceptions. Consider making changes only when necessary.
